Understanding Rashis in Vedic Astrology
The word Rashi literally means “a heap” or “a collection of stars.” In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the celestial sphere is divided into 12 equal segments of 30° each, creating the 12 Rashis that form the foundation of chart interpretation.
Unlike Western astrology which uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons), Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — aligned with the actual positions of constellations in the sky. This means your Vedic Sun sign may differ from your Western sign by about 23 days due to the precession of equinoxes (Ayanamsa).
Each Rashi is characterized by its ruling planet (Graha), element (Tattva — Fire, Earth, Air, Water), and quality (Guna — Cardinal/Chara, Fixed/Sthira, Mutable/Dwiswabhava). Together, these create distinct personality archetypes that have been refined over millennia.
